How to Build a Strong LinkedIn Profile as a Student in Pakistan

The essentials

  • Professional photo and a clear headline
  • An “About” section of 3–5 short lines
  • Experience, projects, volunteering and skills
  • A custom profile URL to add to your CV

LinkedIn is where employers, recruiters and even scholarship committees check your background. A complete profile can bring internship offers to you, and it makes your CV more credible. Here is how to set it up in an afternoon.

1. Photo and banner

  • Use a clear, well-lit photo of your face with a plain background and neat clothes.
  • Add a simple banner image related to your field, or a clean colour.

2. Headline (the most important line)

Do not just write “Student”. Say what you do and what you are looking for.

  • “BS Computer Science student at XYZ University | Python & Web Development | Seeking software internships”
  • “BBA (Finance) graduate | Excel & Power BI | Aspiring credit analyst”

3. About section

Write 3–5 short lines in the first person: your field, your strongest skills with one achievement, and what opportunities you are looking for. End with your email.

4. Experience, projects and volunteering

  • Add internships, part-time work, tutoring and freelancing.
  • Use the Projects section for your final-year project and course projects, with links.
  • Add university society roles and volunteering. These show leadership.
  • Write 2–3 bullet points per entry focused on results.

5. Education, skills and certifications

  • List your degree, university and expected graduation year.
  • Add 10–15 relevant skills and ask classmates or teachers to endorse the top ones.
  • Add certificates from reputable courses.

6. Customise your URL

Change your profile link to something like linkedin.com/in/ali-ahmed and add it to your CV and email signature.

How to network

  • Connect with classmates, teachers, alumni and people at companies you like.
  • Always add a short note: who you are and why you want to connect.
  • Post occasionally about projects, internships or something you learned.
  • Follow companies to see their internship and graduate programme announcements.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Selfies or group photos as your profile picture
  • Leaving the headline as just “Student at…”
  • Spelling errors and copy-pasted text
  • Sending connection requests with no message
