Job Interview Tips for Fresh Graduates in Pakistan: Questions, Answers and Mistakes to Avoid

Before any interview

  • Research the company, its products and recent news
  • Re-read the job description and match your examples to it
  • Prepare 3–4 short stories using STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result)
  • Prepare 2 smart questions to ask at the end

Most fresh graduates are rejected not because they lack skills, but because they cannot explain their skills clearly. The good news is that interviews follow predictable patterns. With a few hours of preparation you can walk in confident.

The 10 most common interview questions

1. “Tell me about yourself.”

Give a 60-second summary: your degree, one or two relevant experiences, and why you want this role. Example: “I recently completed my BBA from XYZ University, majoring in finance. During my internship at ABC Bank I built an Excel dashboard that the branch still uses. I enjoy working with data and want to grow as a credit analyst, which is why this role excites me.”

2. “Why do you want to work here?”

Mention something specific about the company, such as its products, values or growth, and connect it to your goals.

3. “What are your strengths?”

Choose two strengths relevant to the job and give an example for each.

4. “What is your weakness?”

Pick a real, minor weakness and explain what you are doing to improve. Avoid clichés like “I work too hard.”

5. “Tell me about a challenge you faced.”

Use STAR. Focus on what you did and the result.

6. “Where do you see yourself in five years?”

Show ambition within the company’s field, such as leading a small team or gaining a professional qualification.

7. “Why should we hire you?”

Summarise how your skills match the three most important requirements in the job description.

8. “What are your salary expectations?”

Research typical ranges for the role and city. Give a reasonable range and say you are flexible for the right opportunity.

9. “Do you have any questions for us?”

Always say yes. Ask about training, what success looks like in the first six months, or the team you would join.

10. Technical or case questions

Revise core concepts from your degree that relate to the role, such as accounting basics, Excel functions or programming fundamentals.
