Punjab Boards Approve New Marks Improvement Rules for Absent Students

The Punjab Boards Committee of Chairmen (PBCC) has approved amendments to the rules for marks improvement exams. The change mainly helps students who miss one or more papers. The news was reported on 1 October 2026.

What has changed?

  • If you are absent from a paper in a Part-I, Part-II or composite examination, the board will now use your previous result for that subject when it compiles your result. You will no longer lose marks just because you missed a paper while trying to improve.
  • If you are absent from the marks improvement exam itself, your result will be declared as “Marks Improved” and will be based on your existing marks.

According to officials, the aim is to “facilitate students and simplify the rules for marks improvement examinations.”

Who does this apply to?

The rules apply to students of the Punjab boards (BISE Lahore, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, Multan, Sargodha, Bahawalpur, DG Khan and Sahiwal) who appear in matric (SSC) or intermediate (HSSC) marks improvement exams.

Why it matters

Many students take marks improvement exams to raise their aggregate for admission to medical, engineering and other competitive programmes. Before this change, missing a paper because of illness or a clash could hurt a student’s result. Now the previous marks act as a safety net.

What students should do

  1. Check your own board’s website for the official notification and when it takes effect.
  2. If you are planning a marks improvement attempt, confirm the registration dates and fees with your board.
  3. Keep copies of your previous result cards and roll number slips.
