- Visa funds, outside London: £1,171/month now, rising to £1,203 from 30 November 2026

- Graduate route: cut from 2 years to 18 months for applications from 1 January 2027 (PhD stays 3 years)
The UK remains one of the most popular destinations for Pakistani students. Most master’s degrees take just one year, English is the teaching language, and there are strong scholarship options. The rules have tightened in the last two years, though, so plan carefully. This guide covers everything you need to know before applying for the 2027 intakes.
Step 1: Choose your course and university
UK universities have two main intakes: September/October (the largest) and January. Some also offer May starts. Apply 8–12 months ahead for the best chance of admission and scholarships.
- Undergraduate: usually 3 years. Pakistani applicants typically need good A-level or FSc results; many universities ask FSc students to complete a foundation year first.
- Master’s: usually 1 year (taught). A 16-year bachelor’s degree is the normal entry route.
- PhD: 3–4 years, with a research proposal and supervisor match.
Step 2: Meet the English requirement
Most universities accept IELTS Academic (UKVI) with an overall score of 6.0–7.0 depending on the course. Some accept PTE Academic or an English-medium-of-instruction letter from your Pakistani university. Check each course page.
Step 3: Work out the full cost
| Expense | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Tuition: master’s (international) | £15,000 – £30,000+ per year |
| Tuition: undergraduate | £14,000 – £28,000+ per year |
| Living costs, outside London | £1,000 – £1,300 per month |
| Living costs, London | £1,400 – £1,800 per month |
| Student visa fee + Immigration Health Surcharge | Check gov.uk for the current amounts |
Business, medicine and some engineering courses cost more. Many universities offer automatic international scholarships of £2,000–£5,000, so always check.
Step 4: Get your CAS and show funds
Once you accept an unconditional offer and pay any deposit, the university issues a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). You need it to apply for the Student visa.
You must also show you can pay:
- Any unpaid tuition for the first year, and
- Living costs (maintenance) for up to 9 months.
| Location | Per month (now) | From 30 Nov 2026 | 9 months (new) |
|---|---|---|---|
| London | £1,529 | £1,570 | £14,130 |
| Outside London | £1,171 | £1,203 | £10,827 |
The money must stay in the account for 28 consecutive days, and the end of that period must be no more than 31 days before you apply. Pakistani applicants are also usually asked for a TB test certificate from an approved clinic.
Step 5: Apply for the Student visa
- Apply online on gov.uk and pay the visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge.
- Book a biometrics appointment at a visa application centre in Islamabad, Lahore, Karachi or Mirpur.
- Submit your passport, CAS details, bank statements, TB certificate and academic documents.
- Decisions usually take about three weeks; priority services are available for an extra fee.
Working while you study
Degree-level students can work up to 20 hours a week during term and full-time during official vacations. Part-time jobs help with living costs, but you cannot rely on them to pay tuition. You must show the required funds at the visa stage.
Can I bring my family?
Since January 2024, students on taught master’s courses cannot bring dependants. Only students on PhD and other research-based postgraduate courses, and some government-sponsored students, may bring a spouse and children.
After graduation: the Graduate route
The Graduate visa lets you stay and work in the UK after your degree without a job offer. For applications made from 1 January 2027, the bachelor’s and master’s Graduate route is shortened from 2 years to 18 months. PhD graduates still get 3 years. Plan your job search from the start of your course.
Scholarships for Pakistani students
- Chevening Scholarship: fully funded one-year master’s
- Commonwealth Scholarship: master’s and PhD through HEC
- University scholarships: partial awards offered by individual universities
- GREAT Scholarships: offered at selected universities in some years
