The United States Educational Foundation in Pakistan (USEFP) has opened applications for the 2027 Fulbright Scholar Program. This is not the master’s or PhD scholarship most students know. It is a grant for Pakistani academics and researchers who already hold a PhD and want to spend up to 10 months doing research or teaching at a university in the United States.

Who can apply?

  • Pakistani citizens who live and work in Pakistan
  • Holders of a PhD or terminal degree, earned at least two years ago
  • Two career stages are accepted: early-career scholars (2–7 years after the PhD) and senior scholars (8–15 years after the PhD)
  • Strong written and spoken English
  • All academic disciplines are welcome except clinical medicine
  • You should not have studied in the US in the last five years

What the grant covers

  • Round-trip airfare
  • A monthly living stipend
  • Health insurance
  • An incidental research allowance
  • Visa support, plus funding for one accompanying dependent

Additional family members can travel with you, but they will not receive funding.

Documents you need

  1. The completed online application form
  2. Three reference letters
  3. A detailed research or teaching proposal
  4. Supporting documents such as degree certificates, CV and list of publications

Paper applications are not accepted. Apply only through USEFP’s online system.

How to write a strong proposal

  • Start with the problem. Explain in two or three sentences what question your research answers and why it matters for Pakistan.
  • Explain why the US. Name specific labs, archives, datasets or faculty that make a US stay necessary.
  • Be realistic. Your plan must be achievable within 10 months, with clear outputs such as papers, a course design or a dataset.
  • Show impact at home. Describe how you will use the experience when you return, for example new courses, partnerships or policy work.
  • Get letters from people who know your research well. A detailed letter from your supervisor beats a short one from a famous name.

It runs on a different timetable, with its own deadline published by USEFP each year. Science, technology, AI, economics and natural resource management are priority areas. Clinical medicine is not funded, but non-clinical public health is. Keep an eye on usefp.org for the next call.
